New Aldi store a step closer

Two months after the Truro Voice exclusively revealed that Aldi will be relocating to Garras Wharf, plans for the new store have been submit-ted to Cornwall Council.

An application submitted by consultant Planning Poten-tial outlines plans to demol-ish the former B&M and Office outlets to construct a new food store and reconfig-ure the car park, associated landscaping and amended ac-cess.

A statement to support the plans said: “Aldi intends to construct a store at Garras Wharf to serve Truro as a whole. It is intended to re-place the existing Aldi store at Highertown, which no longer meets the operational require-ments of Aldi, or the commer-cial requirements of its customers.

The proposed Aldi will result in considerable economic benefits for the local area, with up to 40 local jobs being created at the site, in addition to short term construction jobs. Employees of the Higher-town store (around 25) will be offered new jobs at the new store.

“The site is currently occupied by two unsightly, vacant retail units. Given the high profile location of the site, located at a gateway to Truro, the proposal will regenerate the site, and the investment could act as a catalyst for future development elsewhere in the area.”

The new store, which would have around 128 parking spaces, proposes to open from 8am to 10pm (Monday to Saturday) and 10am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays. 

The statement continues: “Given the current economic uncertainty and potential for major job losses in many sec-tors following the Covid-19 pandemic, this significant in-vestment in Truro is of even greater importance.

“The proposal will enhance the discount food store provi-sion in the area, and assist in retaining expenditure in the locality which will help re-duce the need to travel, there-fore having sustainability benefits.

“The site is located within the city centre, where retail development is actively en-couraged, and it is ideally sited to benefit from linked trips to the nearby Tesco store and the wider city centre.”

The proposed building would be highly sustainable, with the store incorporating roof-mounted photo voltaic panels to generate clean elec-tricity; a heat recovery system to utilise waste heat to heat the store; use of efficient LED light fittings; use of highly efficient building fab-ric to minimise the need to heat the store; and provision of electric vehicle charging points.

In a design and access statement, architect Kendall Kingscott added: “A develop-ment of the site will provide the following opportunities: To re-invigorate an under-developed site and help maintain continued investment and jobs within the local area. To provide a discount food retail outlet will provide a valuable service to the local community.
Enhance the streetscape and provide a focus for an un-derused site.”

A decision on the proposal will be made by Cornwall Council planners no later than Tuesday, December 22. The planning reference on the online portal is PA20/07590.
