Last Wish Back on the Road

Last Wish Back on the Road
Sam BíStard has been helped by local people

A WOMAN who only has months to live has the chance to fulfil her last wishes after a vehicle disaster put her off the road.

Sam B’stard was diagnosed with terminal cancer seven months ago and plans to take a road trip to Scotland with friends before she passes : “I want to see pine martens, eagles, beavers, otters – everything–when we go to the Highlands.”

But Sam says she bought a van to undertake her final journey with a “desperate mindset”. And the £3,000 purchase turned out to be beyond repair.

The 53-year-old from Chacewater said: “I should have taken a mechanic with me and had it checked before I paid for it.

“I showed the car dealer a letter from my oncologist, so he knew I had a terminal disease.

“I drove it back from Plymouth and took it straight to my garage, which had it for a couple of days before telling me that it was a writeoff"

Her dream of travelling the UK looked to be impossible. Sam, who set up animal rescue centre Last Chance Hotel in Chacewater 11 years ago, received the devastating news earlier this year.

Cancer of the colon has since spread to her liver and she was told she had 12 to 18 months to live.

However, owners of another garage near Redruth have found Sam another camper van and even paid half of the £10,000 fee.

“I’m so grateful to them and it’s reminded me just how kind people can be,” she said. The efforts of North Country Garage have sparked another fund-raising effort from Last Chance Hotel volunteers to find the remaining £5,000.
